Reach the people who can help.
OCSEIA is not a reporting service and cannot receive, monitor, or act on reports. If a child or youth may be at risk, please use the established channels below.
Immediate danger
Call 9-1-1 or your local police service. If someone is thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8. Help is available across Canada at any time.
Report exploitation
Report online sexual abuse or exploitation of a child to Cybertip.ca. You may also contact your local police service.
Ontario child protection
If you have reasonable grounds to suspect a child is or may be in need of protection, contact a children’s aid society directly. Do not assume someone else will report.
Image-related harm
If a youth is worried an intimate image is being shared, or has experienced luring or sextortion, NeedHelpNow.ca can help with next steps and platform notices.
Respond without blame
- Stay calm and tell the child or youth that they did the right thing by speaking up.
- Make clear that the person who threatened, manipulated or exploited them is responsible.
- Do not punish the child by immediately taking away every device or account. First address safety, evidence and support.
- Avoid repeated questioning. Record what was disclosed in the child’s own words and seek guidance from police or child protection authorities.
Preserve information safely
- Record usernames, profile links, telephone numbers, email addresses, dates, times, payment information and the platform or service involved.
- Preserve threatening messages and conversation context where it is safe and lawful to do so. Follow police direction if an investigation is underway.
- Do not search for, download, copy, forward or ask anyone to resend suspected CSAEM. Report the URL, account or location instead.
- For sextortion, stop engagement after preserving necessary message information; do not pay and do not send additional images. Block the account and report it.
